Pump

March 1, 2026 | Miscellany

My parents own an old cottage on the far side of a small northern Ontario lake. When I was a kid it didn’t have hydro or running water, but it had a hand pump in the kitchen that would pull water from the lake. The pump had a short levered handle and a spout. It only worked if there was water in the line, so after a period of not being used you needed to prime the pump by pouring water into it. It seems like a strange process, needing to put water into the pump so that you can get water out of the pump, but that’s how it worked.

Anyway, I have creative block.
