Boiling frog

March 3, 2026 | Miscellany

A frog dropped into a pot of boiling water will jump out.

A frog placed in a pot of room-temperature water that is gradually brought to a boil doesn’t notice the danger and will die.

A frog named Bertram who is a member of a violent swamp militia that demands equality and vengeance for crimes against wildlife escapes the pot with the help of his partner — a smallish grey field mouse named Clancy who has one good eye and an affinity for explosives and recreational pharmaceuticals.

The two renegades set the secluded farmhouse afire using gasoline from the garden shed, and Clancy’s tiny cigarette.

From a safe distance frog and mouse stop for a moment to watch it burn. There are no survivors.

Bertram knows the Cook was just a hired goon, his boss is the real target. In two days time they’ll meet the rest of their group in an abandoned motel outside of Montreal and plan their next move.

The revolution has begun.
